From adversity to purpose: Daniel Edozie’s story of resilience at Rail Wellbeing Live 2026
On this year’s Rail Wellbeing Live stage, one session stood out for its honesty, emotion and hope. In a powerful conversation with Odis Palmer, speaker and mentor Daniel Edozie shared his life story in a way that stayed with everyone watching.
The full recording is available to watch now. It is a session that invites you to pause, listen and reflect.
A story that begins with uncertainty
Daniel’s early life was shaped by constant movement between the UK and the United States. What began as adventure soon became instability.
“One day we’ll be in… Norbury. Next day we’re in New York somewhere… then Boston… it was quite a bit of adventures,” he explained.
Behind those moves was a deeper challenge. As a child, he often did not know where he would sleep or what he would eat.
“Sometimes I didn’t know what I was going to eat during the day… you just go with the moment.”
Over time, that uncertainty became normal.
“I think I became kind of desensitised to the situation because there was so much going on.”
Life at rock bottom
Daniel spoke openly about experiencing homelessness at just 11 and 12 years old, living in shelters and spending time on the streets in places like Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
One of the most striking moments came when he described being left alone in Skid Row.
“12 years old… no phone, no bus pass, no money, no ID… like a lost package in the world.”
Trying to find help, he approached shelters on his own, only to be turned away because of his age. Eventually, support came when a shelter contacted the police, leading to his placement in foster care.
That night marked a turning point.
“Now I’m in the house… this is a whole another world to me.”
Finding direction through sport
Despite everything, one constant in Daniel’s life was basketball. It became both a coping mechanism and a pathway forward.
“If I’m going to get better here… then why should I stop now? Maybe I should just keep going.”
With stability in foster care, he was able to focus on school and sport. That focus paid off. He earned a scholarship, progressed through college basketball in the United States and eventually played professionally.
“There’s thousands of kids all competing… and for me to get it… it’s just the back end of everything I’ve been through.”
It is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when opportunity meets determination.
Building a new life and giving back
Today, Daniel is back in the UK, using his experience to support others. His work centres on mentoring young people and creating positive opportunities through sport.
“Where I’m getting the most reward from is by helping young people… being a positive role model on and off the court.”
Through coaching, mentoring and community programmes, he is helping others find direction and confidence.
Healing and creating stability
A key part of his journey today is personal growth. After a childhood defined by instability, Daniel has worked hard to build a different kind of life.
“I have chose not to move as much… and doing a lot of mindfulness and positive healing.”
He spoke honestly about the importance of addressing what was missing in his early years.
“I’ve had to kind of learn how to heal my own inner child… and restore that.”
Advice for others facing tough times
During the audience Q&A, Daniel shared practical, grounded advice for anyone dealing with loss or hardship.
“It’s okay to acknowledge the problem… but then the next thing is, what is the solution?”
He also reminded people that while challenges can feel overwhelming, action and perspective matter.
“Life… gives individuals the toughest battles because they believe that individual is capable of dealing with it.”
